Valentine's Day is coming up fast! How will you use knitting and crocheting to show someone your love?

There is much talk today about how the trend is "back to basics" as far as yarn is concerned. It used to be that when you used basic yarns, you wanted to do some pretty stitches to make the yarn more interesting. Today we not only use pretty stitches, but we work with color and detailed design. Who knew that you can do all of that just by knitting and purling?

If you would like to delve a little further into creating art with yarn, we would really like to encourage you to attend one (or more) of Jane Slicer-Smith's workshops that she will be offering at our store (?jay??s@?meri?ec?.net).

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced knitter, you will benefit from Jane's ideas, guidance and expertise. Don't miss this opportunity to sit alongside this talented designer who comes to us clear from Australia!

January 24-25th, 2006, How much: $45.00 each (3hours each) Space in these workshops is always limited so we encourage you to sign up quickly.

Here is a little more background on Jane from her own website:

"For the love of art, craft and hand creation, Jane Slicer-Smith has been designing her own unique fashion and picture hand-knitted garments since 1980: "My intarsia classes around the US confirm why I do what I do. I had a wonderful time, staying with new and old friends who own the best yarn stores in the US, and meeting a whole bunch of new ladies, who I hope, learnt a little and had a lot of fun." ... "I am asked so many times what inspires me and where I get ideas from. The answer is everywhere: from nature, architecture, art and history. My greatest influence is the colour in life, be it textiles or nature. Everywhere, it influences us everyday."  Jane Slicer-Smith of Signatur Handknits.

For others of us, the need for texture re-surfaces and we long for changes of colors and fibers. Several companies now have come out with yarns that do the interesting things for you! The fiber and the texture changes as you knit along, and in some cases even the colors.

We've been meeting with representatives from many yarn companies and are getting ready to attend the trade show where we do our buying. We have already ordered a lot of new yarns and our heads are swimming with new and fresh ideas! Speaking of swimming... we already know that nautical themes will be big this coming year! If you are interested in fashion and color forecasting, you may want to check out this site pantone.com/products/ and do a little research for yourself! If this interests you, be sure to click here: (it is a pdf file (portable document format) so you will need Adobe Reader to open it) pantone.com/articles/pdfs/

Our past yarn tastings have been so successful and popular, that we are planning many more. We love to give YOU the opportunity to see new yarns and try them out. We are even planning a junior tasting for the 3rd graders in Caitlyn's school. They know how to kit and "tasting" the yarn will give them and their moms the opportunity to decide which yarns they would like to make their next projects with. Watch for more announcements about this!!

Here are some pictures (click on images for larger views) our Nancy took during Barry's last workshop. Everyone had a great time learning how using a simple crochet stitch can turn into a wonderful scarf or shawl. The crocheters in our midst appreciated the attention given to crochet.  (and he's coming back late February for "Fashionable Purses" Workshop!)...
We promise to do more of that as we line up other teachers who will place more of an emphasis on all things crochet. Even for die-heart knitters, knowing the basic crochet stitches is a must for special embellishments and finishing. Our own Jan will teach a refresher course just to dust off the cobwebs on your skills.

This last week, I got to spend more time at the store than I have in recent weeks. Just being there again filled my heart with gratitude for such a wonderful place, where people can come together and pursue a hobby they love and fellowship with others who feel the same way.

This got me thinking again how wonderful it is to be able to find useful things to do with your hands as the mind wanders or meditates. Many of us have seen our budgets tightened by added costs for everything it seems, and many have opened their pocket books to help victims of natural disasters. But through it all, knitting and crocheting will always have a central part in our lives and well-being. I thought I'd share with you again some excerpts of letters you have sent us (and we've put on "Why I Knit..." page). Enjoy!

- "I fully believe that God brought the knitting back into my life as therapy for my soul." (Billie)
- "It provides a sense of accomplishment when I complete every project. And I know that in the back of my mind I'm carrying on a family tradition." (Micheline)
- "My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 8, I am now 66....It gives me a feeling of satisfaction like nothing else." (Brenda)
- "It is so wonderful (to) know that by teaching a loved one to knit, some their memories of you will be of knitting. What a special legacy to leave behind!" (Gwen)
- Having a son with challenges....I knit because it brings me peace ~ "That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love..." Col 2:2 (Donna)
- "But the reason I continue knitting is because of the sense of peace and serenity it brings, even when the rest of my life may seem to be falling apart! I crave knitting as a way to unwind the same way other people crave their caffeine or nicotine fixes." (Heather)
- "It fills my hands, heart and head while sitting in our motor-home or in the frequent meetings of fellowship we attend. I only make simple things and always give them away. Wouldn't you agree, God is so gracious in giving us the talents and desires to do these things? (Barbara)
- I just wanted to let you know that re: knitting ... you have inspired me again to get back to it again!! I'm even giving Mom a hand with her knitting - she likes to knit scarves but all of a sudden she'll have dropped a stitch or ended up with less or more stitches than she started with, so she unravels the whole thing and starts again... sometimes 2 or 3 times! ;-) So now if I'm there and catch that she's made a mistake I try to fix it for her and have done pretty well. This is my first hat from your recent pattern below! I ended up putting a braid and tassel on it!! ( Laura)

Please write us with your stories, we'd love to hear from you!

And, speaking of hearing from you... here are some recent photos of our customers proud of their accomplishments and ready to be put into our Hall of Fame!  Congratulations everyone! and thank you for sharing!

"Everything is easy once you know how," seems to be one of my favorite expression. To that end we would love to include some tips and tricks to help you along your path of experience. Perhaps YOU have some knitting or crocheting tips that YOU would like to share with us. e-mail us and if they work, we'll print them and give you credit.

Knit/Crochet TIPS:

An extra tip from Gaby:

"When you are trying to stop the rolling, it helps sometimes to do a half-double crochet with the wrong side of the garment facing."

We carry lots of Berroco yarns and books (not online yet though)!  Margery Winter, who is the Creative Director at Berroco, writes their KnitBits newsletters and shares the following with us from #99 (courtesy of Berroco):

"Sabrina from Tallahassee wrote: I am knitting a tank top and there is nothing around the edges to keep it from rolling. I think it looks too homemade. Is there any way to give the edges a more finished look?

Sabrina, thanks for this question. I think it is imperative that all knitters learn a few basic crochet stitches. Whether or not you ever intend to become a crocheter, I encourage you to master these three techniques and put them in your bag of finishing tricks. To finish your tank top, I recommend that you try one of the following:

Work one row of single crochet and one row of backwards single crochet (also known as “crab stitch") around a neckline or edge of a garment to firm up the edges and control the "outside line." For a more delicate finish, perhaps one row of just single crochet will suffice. Another nice touch is one row of slip stitch and then one row of backwards single crochet. You can experiment.

Crochet is so easy to pull out. If you drop a stitch, it doesn't run as in knitting. Chose a crochet hook that corresponds with your knitting needle size. To learn how, find a “how to” book on basic crochet stitches or Google ™ “crab stitch crochet.”"

AND... Here are some color tips courtesy of Tahki Stacy Charles:

"Working with color doesn't have to be complex. Multicolor can be added by combining colors as you knit or by working with a yarn with multicolored effects:

- Give slip stitch a try. The Merino Cable cardigan shown here in made with a combination of easy slip stitches. You work with one color of yarn at a time, but the result is beautiful two-color patterning.

- Don’t be afraid to mix several multicolor yarns in stripes or color-blocking. It’s easiest if you find a central color theme throughout. For example, find one pink or blue shade featured in each different multicolor used.

- Mix tonal shades of different textured yarns for an interesting effect. You can combine a matte, a shiny, a boucle in slightly different colors in simple stripes."
Tahki Stacy Charles

AND... now that you have tips... try your hand at some more patterns... This is just a tease for some new hat patterns I've been working on and we will be updating my patterns!...  Happy Valentine's Day coming up!.. knit or crochet something for someone you love!!

This easy pattern can be made with lots of different yarns. It is worked from side to side in garter stitch. A few easy steps finish the top. The hat can be worked on straight needles so there is nothing “scary” about it. (This hat, so aptly modeled by my "little" brother, is made out of 1 ½ balls of TOUCH ME by Muench.)

Check out this Easy Straight Needle Hat as well as many other patterns on my Gaby's Designs page.

And now for my closing thoughts...

These last few weeks have had me looking at present and past world events wondering HOW humans can be so very cruel to each other and what brings out that absolutely nasty and evil part in a person and, on the contrary, what brings out the compassion and caring that others throughout time have shown.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of a conversation with a lady at the store who is off to a distant place on this globe today, to volunteer her time to minister to those who are so far less fortunate than we are. What an inspiration she was to me! As I went through my files to find appropriate words to share with you I ran across a letter I received several years ago. It was one of those you are supposed to pass around. In reading it again I was so touched that I thought I would share it with you. If you care to read it click here.

God reminded me this past week that what sets good apart from evil is LOVE. Perhaps as you touch a ball of yarn, you can remember to pray for and love someone who is in need.

My Mother and my sister, Birgit
