In the last newsletter I promised to write about crochet...

If you don't already know how to crochet, perhaps now is the time to take just a few simple lessons. Even if you're a die-hard knitter, knowing some basic crochet stitches will often help you with just the right finishing touches.
Click here for some simple crochet tips courtesy of the Crochet Guild of America (please note: this link opens another browser, so that you don't lose your place at Yarn Lady).

Many Crocheters prefer to work with thread and make the doilies that become heirlooms and that you might remember from your Grandmother. Today crocheting has followed knitting into the realm of novelty yarns with great color and texture. If you are adventurous, you will take some lace runner patterns and make them into shawls using novelty yarns in place of thread. Of course your gauge will be much different, but I encourage you to see where this might lead!

Thread and plain yarns are easier to crochet with. Contrary to knitting where all the stitches are neatly lined up on the needle for you, in crocheting you have to find the hole with your hook. In some cases the holes are hard to find when you use novelty yarns. It is possible to FEEL the stitch if you try and once you learned that, the sky is the limit. We have seen superb designs in crochet, using a freeform technique.

Since crocheting is fast and easy to undo, it is easy to "doodle" using different stitches and yarns and truly making a free form. You can find a sewing pattern that you like and cut out the shape and simply doodle a fabric in the shape of your pattern. Try it!! You'll like it!!

Crocheting does usually make a firmer fabric than knitting and it does use a third more yarn than knitting. Crocheting is usually faster than knitting so you trade the added expense for yarn for time spent.

The choice is yours. As you probably know, felting has become THE hot ticket for Knitters. There is no reason why any of the things we knitters are felting, we Crocheters can't make and felt as well. You will see many new books on the market today that cater to the Crocheters. Please come in and check them out!!

And here is one of my patterns for a crocheted poncho!  This one has it all! The sheen of Sunshine, an open and lacy stitch and lots and lots of style. You will think that you are wearing a silky garment. It moves and shines and makes you feel glamorous. Try wearing this over that summer dress or for an evening out. You will be turning heads!! You will love it!! (za?u@?iti?nk.ne?)

The sale will only take place from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, but you are more than welcome to come early, make your selections and visit.*

We would like to continue to schedule more "Parties" like this, so be sure to watch this space for more information!

Besides the "Parties" we have special "Events" as well:

Our most popular one for the last few years has, of course, been our Fashion Show. We have just a few more tickets left, so don't miss out!  It's on a Monday night so you may have to ask for the afternoon off from work, but we know that you will love being there! Click here to see pictures from last year's show!

Our show will be held again at the beautiful Rancho Capistrano School.  Along with the highly anticipated Fashion show, you will be treated to a wonderful dinner;  Barry Klein of Trendsetter Yarns will have with him this time, designer and author Fayla Reiss and the two will bring garments and ideas from their new book: "Knitovation". You will even be able to purchase their new book right at the dinner and have them autographed after the show.

This is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. *If you prefer to sit with a particular group of people, please make sure you arrive with plenty of time to reserve your seats.*

If you're about a size medium and would like to model our garments, please send me an e-mail. We'll pick the first 4 people who volunteer.

As usual, there will be many door prizes, *so be sure to hang on to your ticket to see if you won!!*

But the very highlight of the show again will be when YOU step into the spotlight and show us what YOU have done this past year. Don't be shy but step up and model for us your special creation!

Our "Yarn Tastings" have become so popular that all of our suppliers are now eager to schedule one of their own so they can show YOU what they are so proud of.  Where else can you go, sample all the wonderful new yarns, get a mini fashion show of the new models and even get a chance to try them on for a mere $5.00. If you have always wondered what a particular yarn looks like knitted up, this is your chance to find out! These "Tastings" sell out fast, so reserve your space now!!

A representative from Plymouth will be on hand for our next Yarn Tasting to share all there is to know about their yarns! Very interesting textures and color combinations make these yarns a joy to work with in all your knitting and crocheting projects!

We are most honored to announce to you that Laura Militzer Bryant from Prism Yarn will be here April 17th for a Book Signing and Yarn Tasting and on April 18th for a Special Workshop! If you don't already know about Laura, let me just tell you that Laura has a long list of credentials!...

Laura Militzer Bryant received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan where she concentrated in art textiles. In 1984 Laura founded her company Prism Arts, Inc. As the creative force behind Prism yarns, she has published more than 36 pattern books. She is a contributing editor for Cast On magazine, writing a regular column, "The Art of Knitting", and is on the Advisory Board for The Knitting Guild Association. She teaches design and knitting techniques at conventions, stores and retreats around the country.

*Laura will be with us on the evening of April 17th for a book plate signing featuring her upcoming release, "Yarn Stash Workbook" as well as the FIRST-EVER Prism Yarn Tasting! Not only will you get the opportunity to get a book plate signed as well as attend this unique event, but you will get a chance to meet this fabulous designer. The next day, Laura will teach her "Stuff-On!!" Workshop. "Stuff" is a gorgeous multi-component yarn that gives any garment multiple textures, as well as cuts out the work of having to put together the different yarns yourself. This workshop includes, one hank of Stuff which you can use as a base to match to other yarns in your stash. Laura will then help everyone design their very own garments using these very different ingredients! You just can't beat this opportunity. Class size is limited, so sign up soon! This class is on a Tuesday, so it would be a good idea again to clear your calendar for that.*

New Yarns:

As you may know, Cherie and Niqua are now doing most of the buying, and after listening to your requests have brought in lots and lots of new yarns. I even had to be taken on a tour of the store and I just couldn't believe all the new materials, textures and fibers, not to speak of the colors!

Now would be a good time to get to the store and see the great selection of new yarns they are building. If you are shopping online, please use the links until we have completed our "New Yarns" section to make shopping easier for you.

New Books
:

Hard cover books are so popular now that so many more are being published! We try to get them all in for you. Often they sell out as quick as we get them in!! We are thinking of adding additional shelving (where, oh where, will we put it??) just to display all of these wonderful titles. Please check out our book list often. These are all full color publications which you will keep forever for reference.

New Accessories:

Just as with the books, there are now more accessories than we ever had! There are also new teaching CDs as well as new bags and baskets and PURSE HANDLES!! We have to tell you that we have all sorts of purse handles. The question is, how we will list them all here? We also have leather flower embellishments for your felted bags. We have the magnetic closures for your bags as well. You will just have to join me on a tour of the store and find all of these little goodies that are springing up all over!

And now for my closing thoughts...

"Isn't it amazing that our most precious commodity falls from the sky?", my little brother often tells me. How many of us really do appreciate this? Perhaps we don't give it any thought because we have also seen the destruction an over abundance of water can create. Or we simply don't think about how important water is to our existence. But let's face it: where would we be without it?

As I'm writing this, rain is falling for (I think) the second time since New Years Day. I was gone when the last rain came so I missed it!! We have been known at our store, to run outside and applaud when it rains. I cherish the memory of sitting in the rain with a dear customer and watching a huge rainbow.

The most precious things in life are often right under our noses, or fall on our heads, as the case may be. We just have to recognize them.

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life John 3:16 (New International Version)
