Brandon Mably's Class

See for yourself what took place
at these special workshops
in October of 2004!!

It all started out with a big pile of yarn on the floor in all sorts of colors! First you chose from a pile of very colorful cards. Then you set about duplicating the colors and the "feel" of the cards in your knitting.

Kaffee placed great emphasis on pinning your work to the BOARD periodically as you work He felt very much that thigs look different from a distance and that one needs to gain that perspective.

Kaffe Fassett's Class

One of the class participants was Colleen Davis, President of the North Coast Knitting Guild, a designer and author and teacher in her own right. Here are Colleen's comments as published in her Newsletter:

"A few days ago I participated in the Kaffe Fassett workshop on intarsia with emphasis on using lots and lots of colors to make a design that went beyond "nice". His teaching and expertise is to do many color changes with blips of maverick colors to make the fabric rich and exciting...................At the end of the class both Kaffe and Brandon pinned up everyone's work and did a critique. It might be comforting for all of you to know who are hesitant to take a class or feel that you don't perform well in a class, that I gave myself a "D" (I think Kaffe agreed) for the design I created. I've taken many, many classes, plus I pride myself in being pretty savvy when it comes to color, and yet, I didn't pick quite the right design to work on in class. Even though I'm disappointed that I didn't get on track and execute something I'm capable of, I was in the presence of "the master knitter", other curious knitters and many other stimulating things, so it was a great experience. Now that you've heard my confession, press on, don't get discouraged, take a chance, take a class. The class may not live up to your expectations or you might not perform as well as you would like, but you will always learn something."

"No one commented on my shirt....." Success!!
Kaffe's class was not for the faint at heart- he expected his students to jump right in and select charts from his book and start knitting!

There was lots of critique (some of it even painful) and much encouragement to "just do it!" Those who had trouble with actual techniques were urged to forget about that and just let the colors do the talking.

Many eager students came prepared with their assigned homework.
Day three brought the much anticipated lecture. We went to a different location to accommodate all the people.
Brandon brought many samples and put on his own Fashion Show.
Towering over all was "THE BOARD". The BOARD was the feedback and the ultimate critique.
At the end of the workshop, Brandon matched all the swatches with the post cards they were supposed to represent and pinned them on the board. He kept hinting that this would be the highlight of the class. It was! Everyone could be real proud of their achievements and many came away from this with new ideas on how to work with color.
Of course there was a time of signing books!
Of course we wanted to have a picture taken with the four of us. This setting was Brandon's idea. Everyone had worked up quite an appetite so...
We fixed lots and lots of coffee. ...we surprised the students and served them lunch! Caught us breaking for lunch
We're blessed to have nice areas around our store for some time out The store was closed, so we set a table outside. The lunch line
We took turns "guarding" the door and offering help to people who found themselves locked out for the day. Dutch and Clayle were ever helpful to make every-
thing go smoothly.
How do you fit 60 plus people into one store? Tightly! Thank you all for participating and making this event such a success!!
